    Smartphone-based colorimetric sensor application for measuring biochemical material concentration

    In this paper, colorimetric analysis for biochemical samples has been realized, by developing an easy-to-use smartphone colorimetric sensing android application that can measure the molar concentration of the biochemical liquid analyte. The designed application can be used for on-site testing and measurement. We examined three different biochemical materials with the application after preparation with five different concentrations and testing in laboratory settings, namely glucose, triglycerides, and urea. Our results showed that for glucose triglycerides, and urea the absorbance and transmittance regression coefficient (R2) for the colorimetric sensing application were 0.9825, and 0.9899; 0.9405 and 0.9502; 0.9431 and 0.8597, respectively. While for the spectrophotometer measurement the (R2) values were 0.9973 @560 nm and 0.9793 @600 nm; 0.952 @620 nm and 0.9364 @410 nm; 0.9948 @570 nm and 0.9827 @530 nm, respectively. The novelty of our study lies in the accurate prediction of multiple biochemical materials concentrations in various lightning effects, reducing the measurement time in an easy-to-use portable environment without the need for internet access, also tackling various issues that arise in the traditional measurements like power consumption, heating, and calibration. The ability to convey multiple tasks, prediction of concentration, measurement of both absorbance and transmittance, with error estimation charts and (R2) values reporting within the colorimetric sensing application as far as our knowledge there has not been any application that can provide all the capabilities of our application

    Terahertz dipole nanoantenna arrays: resonance characteristics

    Resonant dipole nanoantennas promise to considerably improve the capabilities of terahertz spectroscopy, offering the possibility of increasing its sensitivity through local field enhancement, while in principle allowing unprecedented spatial resolutions, well below the diffraction limit. Here, we investigate the resonance properties of ordered arrays of terahertz dipole nanoantennas, both experimentally and through numerical simulations. We demonstrate the tunability of this type of structures, in a range (∌1–2 THz) that is particularly interesting and accessible by means of standard zinc telluride sources. We additionally study the near-field resonance properties of the arrays, finding that the resonance shift observed between near-field and far-field spectra is predominantly ascribable to ohmic damping

    Selenium as stressor and antioxidant affects pollen performance in Olea europaea

    Abstract Selenium (Se) as an antioxidant is a trace element essential to wellness and the maintenance of human health. Although it has not been confirmed to be an essential micronutrient in higher plants, there is increasing evidence of its benefits in plants in which it inhibits the detrimental effects of environmental stressors, while only few studies refer to its action on pollen germination. Selenium enhances the stress tolerance regulating the production and quenching of reactive oxygen species (ROS); however, the endogenous ROS are essential to the cross-talk between pollen and stigma and promote pollen tube growth. The action of Se has many mechanisms, not all yet fully clarified. In order to deepen the knowledge and fill the gaps in the role of Se as an inhibitor of ROS and, at the same time, a promoter of pollen germination, we attempted this research, enriching olive trees growing in pots and in the field with Se. The plants in pots were kept at a controlled water regime in order to induce drought stress. To test the effect of antioxidant on pollen performance, a single application of Se was supplied to the plants at the beginning of pollen development. Two olive cultivars (Arbequina and Maurino) were used in three different experiments in which Se enrichment was carried out through (i) endo-xylematic drip injection, (ii) foliar spray, (iii) soil application. The pollen performance was assessed at anthesis. The results showed that Se enrichment in non-stressed plants induced a higher rate of pollen viability and germination, but it did not always stimulate their reproductive performance. Different responses were obtained in drought stressed plants, in which Se induced pollen germination, obtaining a performance similar to non-stressed plants.     Extremely large extinction efficiency and field enhancement in terahertz resonant dipole nanoantennas

    The distinctive ability of nanometallic structures to manipulate light at the nanoscale has recently promoted their use for a spectacular set of applications in a wide range of areas of research including artificial optical materials, nano-imaging, biosensing, and nonlinear optics. Here we transfer this concept to the terahertz spectral region, demonstrating a metal nanostructure in shape of a dipole nanoantenna, which can efficiently resonate at terahertz frequencies, showing an effective cross section >100 times larger than its geometrical area, and a field enhancement factor of ~280, confined on a lateral section of ~λ/1,000. These results lead to immediate applications in terahertz artificial materials exhibiting giant dichroism, suggest the use of dipole nanoantennas in nanostructure-based terahertz metamaterials, and pave the way for nanoantenna-enhanced terahertz few-molecule spectroscopy and localized terahertz nonlinear optics

    Assessing the Functional Relevance of Variants in the IKAROS Family Zinc Finger Protein 1 (IKZF1) in a Cohort of Patients With Primary Immunodeficiency

    Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most frequent symptomatic primary immunodeficiency. Patients with CVID are prone to recurrent bacterial infection due to the failure of adequate immunoglobulin production. Monogenetic defects have been identified in ~25% of CVID patients. Recently, mutations in IKZF1, encoding the zinc-finger transcription factor IKAROS which is broadly expressed in hematopoietic cells, have been associated with a CVID-like phenotype. Herein we describe 11 patients with heterozygous IKZF1 variants from eight different families with autosomal dominant CVID and two siblings with an IKZF1 variant presenting with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This study shows that mutations affecting the DNA binding domain of IKAROS can impair the interaction with the target DNA sequence thereby preventing heterochromatin and pericentromeric localization (HC-PC) of the protein. Our results also indicate an impairment of pericentromeric localization of IKAROS by overexpression of a truncated variant, caused by an immature stop codon in IKZF1. We also describe an additional variant in TNFSF10, encoding Tumor Necrosis Factor Related Apoptosis Inducing Ligand (TRAIL), additionally presented in individuals of Family A. Our results indicate that this variant may impair the TRAIL-induced apoptosis in target cell lines and prohibit the NFÎșB activation by TRAIL and may act as a modifier in Family A.Fil: Eskandarian, Zoya.     Experimental demonstration of machine-learning-aided QoT estimation in multi-domain elastic optical networks with alien wavelengths

    In multi-domain elastic optical networks with alien wavelengths, each domain needs to consider intradomain and interdomain alien traffic to estimate and guarantee the required quality of transmission (QoT) for each lightpath and perform provisioning operations. This paper experimentally demonstrates an alien wavelength performance monitoring technique and machine-learning-aided QoT estimation for lightpath provisioning of intradomain/interdomain traffic. Testbed experiments demonstrate modulation format recognition, QoT monitoring, and cognitive routing for a 160 Gbaud alien multi-wavelength lightpath. By using experimental training datasets from the testbed and an artificial neural network, we demonstrated an accurate optical-signal-to-noise ratio prediction with an accuracy of ~95% when using 1200 data points.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Green and simple extraction of free seleno-amino acids from powdered and lyophilized milk samples with natural deep eutectic solvents

    Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) were introduced for the extraction of free seleno-amino acids from lyophilized and powdered milk samples. Different NADES were evaluated, and lactic acid:glucose (LGH) showed the highest selenium recoveries. Selenium analysis was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS). Se-NADES analysis in ICP MS was optimized according to the radio frequency power and nebulization gas flow rate. Se-NADES extraction was optimized by an experimental design. LGH dilution, LGH volume, sample quantity, and ultrasound time were factors influencing the extraction. Seleno-amino acids were determined by liquid chromatography-ICP MS. After optimization, the limits of detection obtained were 7.37, 8.63, and 9.64 ”g kg−1 for selenocysteine, selenomethionine, and seleno-methyl-selenocysteine, respectively. The NADES-extraction is a green procedure with 2 penalty points in the EcoScale.
